Winter warmers
As much as winter is the time of the year we tend to slow down, hide away and hibernate we also have to be careful to not let ourselves become too complacent, too lazy and indulge in comfort food too much.  After a summer of faster pace, more activity rest and replenishment is essential, but over doing this and reverting towards laziness and comfort will not assist with nourishment and revival of your energy over this period.  The last thing we want is to reach spring, and have that realisation of "oh god how am I going to fit into that swim suit" or those summer clothes.

What can you do over winter to keep yourself and your health on track?

Firstly, DO NOT give up on exercise.  Exercise keeps your internal engine running, it is far too easy to use the cold as an excuse to stay inside, but get out either braving the elements and dress warmly, or get inside to a training establishment, you will be guaranteed to feel better after your session and more revived.

Ensure to avoid the trap of starchy comfort foods.  Utilise your crock pot/slow cooker, use soups and stews, roasts, etc to have beautiful warm, nourishing, wholesome meals with out the processing, and starch.  Satisfaction is gained from essential fatty acids (ie good qulaity oils), protein and warmth so ensure to have these components in your meal and you will crave less later.

Create warmth in your meals by adding ginger, cinnamon, chilli, cumin, paprika, cayenne etc to keep warmth in your system throughout the day, keeping your metabolism boosted with added heat.

Most importantly, get in the right head space for winter.  If you set your goals and have something to work towards you are more likely to keep yourself on track throughout the winter and will arrive in spring feeling great and energised.

What is your favourite meal in winter? Or best way to overcome the winter blues?

Great tips. I'm really enjoying using my slow cooker again. Here's my favourite winter recipe - http://mixitupcookbook.blogspot.com/2011/02/chana-masala-mix.html
