For many, going on holiday also means taking a break from a "healthy lifestyle". The problem is, once this happens, energy also decreases and the waistline increases. Whilst we are out of the normal routine of our exericse and meals, it is still fairly easy to stay mostly on track without it becoming a stress whilst away.
Food wise, if you find you are eating out most of the time, it is essential to keep an eye on the menu to select the most appropriate choices for you. If the menu doesn't quite fit what you are after, don't be afraid to ask. They will always generally have a salad on menu which they can add to a meal to add some fresh greens, and you can always ask them to replace the potato with a vegetable option to remove temptation. Being cautious of the big Continental breakkies in the hotel, to not go overboard on the fried hashbrowns, sausages and processed foods like the breads and pastries. There will generally be an option of some freshly cooked eggs, with some mushrooms and tomatoe, and hopefully some fresh fruit to ensure getting some fresh food in.
If you have a fridge in your hotel room, utilise this to pick up a few items such as fresh salad leaves, sprouts, and any salad/vegetables you can add through a salad of choice, for either a snack or to make a meal with a protein choice. This will also help stick to a tighter budget than eating out all the time. Also taking a high quality protein powder with you will help to keep you full and satisfied if you need to use that with snacks or to top up the protein option of a meal.
Do not forget to keep your water intake up. This is crucial, as with holidays there generally is more processed food treats, alcohol etc by ensuring there is plenty of water will help to keep your body cleansing naturally. Even better, each morning try to incorporate some fresh squeezed lemon into a glass of water to enhance the detoxification.
When consuming alcohol, try to keep it to a Pinot noir wine as this is the highest nutrient rich wine, and if not wine, going for a high quality Vodka, lime and soda or grapefruit juice. Try not to go to overboard so you don't wreck your time away by feeling hungover and fatigued, as this will also lead to poorer choices in food.
Of course keeping up your exercise whilst away is also extremely beneficial. Whilst "trapped" in queenstown last week due to snow, it obviously made it harder to get out and go for a run (in prevention of slipping over on ice and causing major pain), we made the most of utilising either the gym in the hotel or if there is no gym doing an exercise routine in the hotel room. This can include things like burpees, dips, squats, press ups, sit ups etc. I also incoroporated daily yoga with a strong focus on breathe to allow a better state of homeostasis in the body and increasing oxygenation and toxic clearance.
If you are on a summer holiday, there is no excuse to not get outside and at least go for a nice walk in the sunshine each day.
Most importantly enjoy your holiday. The change of routine and more rest is so beneficial for rebalancing your body and mind.
