March Newsletter 2010
Welcome everyone to the first newsletter for 2010. It’s March already, and I hear you all wondering where did the first two months go? Like everyone this has been a busy start to 2010 for us at Discover and we are planning for an eventful and exciting year ahead. After the New Year landed, as we do every year, planning was commenced and the theme for us as a practice for 2010 is Intention and Awareness. Instead of setting resolutions we believe it is more beneficial to select a theme for the year and allow this to be your focus for growth and ongoing improvement, be it on a personal or professional level. This can then be brought into all aspects of what we do, whether it is food, exercise, meditation or purely how we function in our careers. What is your theme for 2010?

September 2009, seems a distant memory with all of the hussle and bussle to get Discover Health on the ground and running, move the practice and start gathering the team of professionals to work with Tarryn and I. We are fortunate enough to have met and commenced working with some highly regarded professionals in their respective fields. Firstly Cerise Binns, has commenced as our resident Beauty and Spa Therapist, coming to us with 10 years experience. Having just completed some upskill training in Aromatherapy and Ayurvedic Lifestyle consultancy, Cerise is keen to get back into working in the health arena, specializing in Dr Hauschka facials and beauty packages along with detoxification and rejuvenation body therapies. Her touch is delightful and the packages on offer are a great way to enhance a healthy diet and exercise regime.

Terry Petersen, has also commenced with us this week as our Remedial Body Therapist and Hellerwork practitioner. Terry has worked extensively in London and for the last 10 years in the Coromandel, bringing to the practice an abundance of experience with her. Terry is looking to have a busy and successful practice here in Auckland working Monday to Thursday at Discover and Fridays at the Northcote pools as a Watsu practitioner (Water Shiatsu).

Dr Louisa Walker will be commencing at Discover on the 15th March as our resident Clinical Psychologist. Louisa has been living in NZ for 8 years, originally from the USA, and is looking forward to the opportunities that having a central city practice brings. Louisa works as a Mind Body therapist, bridging the gap between the physiology and the mind. We are looking to have Dr Walker facilitate some meditation style mindfulness classes at Discover so watch out for those as places will be limited.

We still have two rooms to go, so the search is on for practitioners that are aligned and fit with our vision of Wellness & Rejuvenation for these rooms. We are delighted with the team that we have gathered so far, and we feel that this will enhance the services and standards of health care that you have all become so accustomed to. If you know of anyone that may be interested, please recommend that they make contact with me.

On a sadder note we have said goodbye to Barbara, who has sold up the family home in Auckland and is onto her next stage of life, moving to a lifestyle property outside of Auckland. Where is the only question? We have so much to be grateful for in Barbara’s time with us, she will be dearly missed and we really want to send out a big Thanks Barb, you are a gem!

I look forward to seeing the growth of the practice over the next few months and hope to see you all in the practice, be it for nutritional guidance, or for any of the new services that are on offer. Spread the news, “There is a new health experience happening in Auckland!”

Yours in Health and Vitality

Intentions, Goals and Themes

soccer_goal.jpgStarting 2010 with good intentions, goals and themes will help to get you into a positive state of mind which in turn will assist you with your direction for the year. Whether these are financial, career, relationships, weight, health, travel etc, by putting it down on paper it not only becomes something to work towards but is real and becomes a constant reminder of what you are wanting to achieve. One of the most important things to remember when setting goals is how we are going to achieve them. It becomes all too easy to dream of what we want, where we want to be and who we want to be, but without putting the strategies in place to work towards reaching those goals, very rarely do they become a reality.

We also need to look at our map of goals and in order to reach the place where we want to be, we need to make sure we know where we are to start with. This sounds like something that should be completely obvious, but for many it is not. For example, many of us do not know where we are with our health, just that we want to “be healthier”. Like many things in life to reach our full potential, coaches are of benefit to assist you to that goal in a faster, more efficient way, and generally enable you to achieve greater results with a higher level of accountability and support. This of course is where we at Discover fit in, however there are coaches in many areas of life whether they are business coaches, personal coaches, councellors, personal trainers etc

running-exercise.jpgWe are consistently in a state of change, and having these intentions set helps us to grow forward, and improve ourselves. Putting our intentions in place such as "I want to work towards optimal health", and then working out our goals to reach those intentions ie "I will exercise at least 4 x week, I will ensure to eat lean protein and plenty of vegetables with each meal, I will see my Naturopath to ensure I am doing all I can to achieve this" etc. When setting your goals, following a STAR model is beneficial (Specific, Timebound, Assessable and Results based) so you can ensure you are reaching your goals. Finally setting a theme for the year will help keep you tracking towards a fantastic 2010. The theme is based around what you would like to experience and feel over the year, whether it is productivity, enthusiasm, gratitude, love, expansion and growth etc. Once you start working on these, you are continually striving to achieve them, and your results will be driven towards success.

Good luck and Welcome to 2010!

Recipe of the Month

Tahini Marinated Chicken with Beetroot Salad

Ingredients

tahini_marinated_chicken_with_beetroot_salad.jpgChicken
1/4 cup tahini (sesame seed paste)
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup plain yoghurt
1/2 cup cold water
4 chicken breasts, skin removed and trimmed of fat
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
olive oil
3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
For the beetroot salad
4 medium beetroot (600g in total)
1 red onion, peeled and finely sliced
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup chopped fresh coriander
2 teaspoons orange-blossom water
juice of 1 orange
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Chicken
Combine tahini, ginger, garlic, yoghurt and water in a bowl. Thickly smear this tahini mixture all over chicken breasts, then place the breasts in a large flat dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate to marinate for at least 4 hours.Preheat oven to 180ºC. Remove chicken breasts from marinade, discarding any marinade remaining in the dish. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Brush an oven pan with a little olive oil; place chicken in the pan and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Bake for 15-20 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve with beetroot salad.

For the beetroot salad
Cook whole (unpeeled) beetroot in boiling salted water for 40 minutes or until tender. Drain well and set aside to cool. Peel beetroot (once cold the skins will simply slip off) and cut flesh into thin strips. Combine beetroot strips in a bowl with remaining ingredients and toss well. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serves 4.

We look forward to seeing you in the practice soon!
