October 09 Newsletter

As many of you are aware we have had a name change and a change of location. This has been a dream and a vision of both Tarryn’s and mine for some time now, in fact the planning for our Wellness and Rejuvenation Centre has been underway for the last 18 months. We love our new home and we welcome each and every one of you to pop in and see what is in the midst of being created.

As with the birth of new things, there come the labour pains, some of which are necessary and others just niggles in the preparation of the real event. The speed of which we had to put this all together has been the painful part but this was essential to deliver what we have created to you all, without excessive interruption to our services. Our suppliers are telling us that there is nothing else like what we have created in the Auckland market, perhaps even New Zealand, so we will continue to strive to bring all the components of our vision together as quickly as we are humanly able. We are now at the recruiting stage, seeking other practitioners that have the level of skill, desire and professionalism to provide our clients with additional services outside of our skill base.

If anyone knows of a practitioner that would fit well with our team, please ask them to call us; we would love to talk to massage therapists, beauty therapists, acupuncturists, homeopaths, yoga practitioners, and mind/counsellor/psychology therapists, holistic GPs or dentists. We are very excited about bringing this to the corporate world of Auckland central, at the same time as being accessible for our clients in the suburbs. Thank you to everyone who has supported us through the delivery process now begins the pleasure of nurturing and raising this infant to become a well recognised and respected member of society.

Future events at Discover Health are always listed on our website, and you will need to be watching that for our opening day of which the date is soon to be decided. As usual we have our ongoing monthly Food for Life seminar, which has been remodelled, upgraded and looks to be very interesting. Along with this we have our monthly theme; this month being Detoxification and Rejuvenation, and Tarryn has provided us all with some necessary information and products in this newsletter for those that are thinking of reducing the heavy stodginess of winter. Spring is the best season for this to be done as with all life in spring there is a new energy rising and abundance of new growth with it. What better time to clean our cells than now.

Another event is the anniversary of Barbara Tull resident practice manager and Bruce Harper resident Osteopath being with the Discover Team. Both Barb and Bruce started with us in September last year and have proved time and again to be great team members. Thank you both for your support and dedication to what will be amazing in the years to come. I’m sure everyone that has come in to contact with either of these team members agrees that they are an asset to our growing practice.

Our newest member to the team is Jessie Williams, whom is very excited to have the opportunity to put her customer service skills gained in the hospitality sector to a new role as our Receptionist. Jessie is available from 8am to 5pm every weekday to take your calls, orders or general enquiries so feel free to utilise and benefit from these new and extended reception hours. Please remember though to look at using the
shopping cart online if these hours are outside of the times that you want to be ordering products.
Well there is plenty of juicy information to read ahead, so take care everyone and enjoy the beautiful season ahead with nourishing food and healthy lifestyle practices.

Yours in health and vitality

Jen

Detoxification and Spring Cleaning.

With winter coming to an end, and spring being all about freshness and new beginnings, October is a great time to embark on a detoxification of the mind and body to prepare for summer and be in the best shape physically and mentally.

Over winter, there is generally a tendency to hibernate, and with hibernating also comes heavier foods, more alcohol, less water and less exercise. A combination of these can lead us to feel sluggish, heavy and nowhere near where our optimum functioning should be at; let alone the thought of stripping off layers for the summer weather being fairly daunting for many!

What can we do to start the process of preparing for summer to feel and look our best?

The change of weather to a warmer and dryer temperature leads us naturally to eat more raw, lighter foods and with daylight savings also encouraging us to get outside more and do more exercise. Thus the combination of the two also increases our demand for water which is one of the most essential nutrients for keeping our system healthy and clean.

Toxins can come from many sources such as environmental chemicals, foods, drinks, artificial chemicals, body products etc through to endogenous sources such as hormones, microbial and metabolic wastes. The toxins are stored in our fat, and lifestyle choices can either hinder or enhance the way our body detoxifies. Things such as stress, diet, lack of sleep, digestive ability, liver and kidney function all play a part in how well we detoxify and when things are sluggish we start to notice symptoms such as fatigue, sluggish bowels, headaches, muscle aches and weakness, change in appetite, poor immunity etc.

The first step of detoxification is always purifying our systems through our diet and lifestyle and this is the foundation towards good health. The less stress we place on our body through what we ingest, the less stress our organs are under therefore increasing our level of health and vitality. To take the first step after winter towards a cleaner you, increasing the level of fresh, raw veggies is essential, as well as cutting out heavy foods such as dairy and red meat, and of course cutting out alcohol and sugar. Increasing your water intake to at least 30ml per kg of body weight and also consuming regular lemon in water as this also helps to enhance detoxification organs. Fresh vegetable juices are also an added bonus as the phytochemicals and nutrients are utilised by the body to improve and speed up detoxification.

As the main organs of detoxification are the liver, kidney, digestive tract, lymphatic system and skin it is vital that all these organs are addressed to ensure optimal and thorough detox. At discover we have developed a unique protocol for detoxification using the best product selection available which works on each of these systems strategically ensuring a safe and comprehensive detoxification.

The benefits of doing a detox are increased energy, improved mental clarity and concentration, improved sleep, weight loss, decreased cellulite, healthier looking skin, improved bowel movements and much more!

Watch this space at Discover to be able to integrate these practises into you detoxification processes and lifestyle. We will be running regular yoga classes and massage practitioners will be on board.

Talk to your Naturopath today about starting a detox, and even better encourage some friends to join in for more support.

Food of the Month: Asparagus

Asparagus is a great source of Vitamin K, folate, Vitamin C and potassium. Consuming a diet high in folate is essential for a vital part of detoxification processes called methylation. The high potassium content is also valuable for its diuretic effects, improving release of toxins and reducing water retention. Not only assisting with clearance of water retention and assisting the liver with methylation Asparagus also contains Inulin which we don’t digest but is the health promoting friendly bacteria in our large intestine. When our diet contains good amounts of Inulin, the growth and activity of these friendly bacteria increases. This makes it more difficult for unfriendly bacteria to grow in the intestinal tract making our digestive ability much stronger and enabling further absorption of nutrients.
